The app

The app needs no account and tracks nothing you do. It downloads update information from GitHub Releases, which sees your IP address as with any download.

The ad, in the free version. Every few hours the app asks this site which ad to show, saying only your system (macOS on Apple silicon, say) and the app’s version, and downloads its picture from here. Each time is counted by day, ad and system, to tell the advertiser how often it was shown; nothing that identifies you is kept, and the ad knows nothing about your documents. How many of the ad’s bands were really on your screen (half of one, for a second; each band of a document once) the app adds up and sends now and then, just the number, counted the same way. Clicking the ad opens it in your browser through this site, which counts the click the same way and sends you on to the advertiser. The ad-free version asks for no ads.

A daily count of copies running. At most once a day the app tells this site that it ran: your system, the app’s version, free or ad-free, and the first time ever, that it’s new. No id or anything else goes with it, so one day’s count can’t be linked to another’s or to you; it’s added to that day’s totals (by country, from Cloudflare), and your address isn’t kept. That’s how we know how many people use the app. Turn it off in Help → Send Anonymous Usage Counts; then nothing is sent, nor the ad’s views.

Crash reports, if you choose. If the app crashes, it asks whether to send a crash report: the app’s version and system, the error, where in the app it happened and the names of the last few actions. Never your documents, file names or anything that identifies you; no IP address is kept. You can have reports sent automatically, or never, and change that in Help.

Buying the ad-free version

Payment is made on Stripe’s checkout page: we never see your card. We keep your email address and your code, to send you the code and to find it again if you lose it, and where the purchase started (the app’s ad, its Remove Ads window, or this site), to know what helps people find it. Our emails are sent by Cloudflare, which hosts this site.

Activating a code sends the code, an anonymous id of the computer, its name as its system calls it (“Bat’s MacBook Pro”), the system and the app’s version. The id is made from the computer’s own one way, so it can’t be turned back into it. They’re kept with the code so a code is used on no more computers than it’s for, and so you can tell your computers apart in your account; deactivating takes them off.

Checking, about once a week. The ad-free app asks this site whether its computer still has its place (it hasn’t if you deactivated it in your account, or the code was refunded), sending the same as when it was activated. If it hasn’t, the app shows ads again. Without a connection nothing changes.

Your account. You sign in with a link we email to the address you bought with: no password. Signed in, your browser keeps one cookie for this site, for 30 days or until you sign out, only to know it’s you; it isn’t used for anything else.
